Basic information

Dvůr Králové nad Labem

An ancient dowry town of Bohemian queens, Dvůr Králové nad Labem spreads across a picturesque valley at the upper flow of the river Elbe. The town invites you to spend an active relaxation holiday. You can discover beautiful countryside, many artistic monuments, and enjoy sporting and cultural activities, at any time of the year.

There are several accommodation options in the town, most within walking distance of practically anywhere. This ensures easy access to historical, cultural and sporting attractions in the town centre, as well as the option of visiting local restaurants, cafés and sweet shops.

Combine a walk through the town with a hike to the tower of the Church of St. John the Baptist. Yes, that’s right. This was the very place where Václav Hanka found the Manuscript of Dvůr Králové. Supposedly the oldest written Czech text, with 14 songs from the 13th century, which shook Czech history. Do you like views? You will definitely enjoy the amazing view of the town and its surroundings.

Do you want to experience Christmas in the summer? A trip to Dvůr Králové nad Labem offers that, too. Then you should not miss a visit to the Town Museum, where you will have the opportunity to see a permanent Christmas decoration exhibition. You will find out how the production of decorations developed, and you will look through the entire cycle, from blowing and wetting, through embellishing and clasping, to packing them in boxes.  You will experience everything in a playful form; the interactive exhibition will entertain not only you, but also your children. In addition to this, in the museum you can also follow the trail of our town’s history, and familiarize yourself not only with the most significant events of times long forgotten, but also with the history of the textile industry tradition in the Dvůr Králové region.

You will find the rest, peace and 1930s atmosphere you desire in the courtly Tyrš swimming pool complex, which boasts two large swimming pools and children’s paddling pool.  Your children will surely be delighted when they see the children’s playground and the volleyball, beach volleyball, basketball, foot tennis, table tennis and mini-golf facilities directly in the swimming pool complex.  Shade is provided by high-growing trees, or a sit-down in a restaurant with an extensive food and drinks menu. Your whole day will fly by; you definitely won’t be bored here.

Do you want to enjoy a perfect day among African animals, drive in your own car or in a modified minibus through a unique African Safari among freely roaming zebras, antelopes, buffaloes and birds, visit an exhibition of the Dark Continent’s poisonous snakes or let off steam with the kids in a rope park? Stop in the Dvůr Králové Zoo, in a garden with more than sixty years of history, which belongs among the leading African animal breeders in the world.  During this year’ summer season, visitors can look forward to another unique experience - a Lion Safari which will open in July. For those who want to enjoy an unrivalled holiday, the zoo offers accommodation in the Safari Hotel or Safari Camp, which are part of the large garden compound. You can look forward to gastronomic experiences in Resturace U Lemura (Lemur Restaurant).

Cycle paths everywhere I look! That could be a slogan depicting Dvůr Králové nad Labem. The town and its surroundings are literally interlaced with cycle paths which invite you to take bike trips.  Set off against the flow of the river Elbe, where you will find probably the most beautiful dam in the Czech Republic and National Heritage Monument, Les Království (Royal Forest). It’s surrounded by picturesque forests, and represents a pleasant place for both relaxation and learning. From here it’s just a short trip to the highest local peak, Zvičina. You will see the Krkonoše mountains as if they were in the palm of your hand, and watching the sunset will be a real ending to a pleasantly spent day.

A transport airport which offers the option of sight-seeing flights over the town and its surroundings is situated at the other end of Dvůr Králové nad Labem, in the Žireč district. Further in the same direction you will find the 21st century Way of the Cross, titled “A Tale of Man’s Suffering and Hopes”, Braun’s Bethlehem, and the revitalized Baroque Kuks Hospital - pearl of the peak of the Baroque period at the turn of the 17th and 18th century.

Even in the winter, Dvůr Králové nad Labem has much to offer you. When the excursion paths are covered in snow, you can go cross-country skiing on the white trail or enjoy downhill skiing.
