The Dvůr Králové Zoo was opened to the public on the 9th of May 1946, and its significant development took place in the 1970s. The director at the time, Mr. Josef Vágner, C.Sc, imported around 2 thousand animals from eight expeditions to various African countries; mostly hoofed animals, but also cats, monkeys and reptiles, which became the basis for unique breeds. It is partly thanks to this that the zoo is a unique geno-bank of African hoofed animals on the European continent.
Over an area of 60 ha, visitors can view the largest collection of African animals in Europe. The largest herd of giraffes bred in captivity in the world lives here, with the number of giraffe calves born exceeding 260 individuals. The long-term breeding of all three types of African rhinoceroses is also unique; until recently, there was a rarity here in the form of the only white rhinoceros in Northern Europe. The female, Nabiré, died on Monday the 27th of July 2015. A major attraction is the unique African Safari, where visitors can drive among freely roaming zebras, antelopes and birds. Dvůr Králové Zoo is the only zoo in Central Europe that even offers you the opportunity to drive your car among a pride of lions. The big cat pavilion, tropical swamps, bird world, flamingo aviary, elephant pavilion, water world, pygmy hippo pavilion, meerkat pavilion, okapi pavilion, insect world and gorilla pavilion are open for visitors all year round. The zoo includes a Gallery of paintings by Zdeněk Burian, and a natural amphitheatre. Fun on several huge playgrounds, or in the rope park, is also a pleasant diversion for both children and adults.
During the year the zoo organizes a number of special events for visitors, for example the summer festival Africa Live, Christmas Zoo, and Ghost Week. In the summer it offers the only Evening Safari in Europe. The zoo also organizes African cultural events, whether they are exhibitions of African art, tastings of African food or perhaps concerts by African bands.
Visitors can stay in the Safari Park Resort. It’s located directly in the zoo compound and offers a wide range of accommodation options, from hotel-type lodges in the Safari Hotel, through bungalows, to safari tents with a view of the African animals’ pen in the Safari Camp.
