The highest and most visited mountain range in the Czech Republic is located around 40 to 50 km from Dvůr Králové nad Labem. The ridges of the Krkonoše mountains stretch for 35km from Novosvětské Sedlo [New World Saddle] in the west to Královecké Sedlo [Royal Saddle] in the east. The highest mountain, Sněžka, on the Czech-Polish border, lies at an altitude of 1,603 metres above sea level.
Due to its exceptional natural wealth, the Krkonoš area was declared a national park in the year 1963. Thanks to its natural beauty, terrain configuration and snow conditions, the Krkonoše mountains have become one of the most sought-after places for recreation in the Czech Republic. In the summer season, this mainly involves walking and cyclo-tourism. A well-developed system of signposted trails is available, as well as many mountain cabins. In the winter season, the Krkonoše mountains offer ideal conditions for skiers. A large number of ski centres is available, with modified ski lifts and slopes, as well as tens of kilometres of cross-country trails.
A well-functioning infrastructure has been built in the area, which enables visitors to fully enjoy their stay in the Krkonoše mountains.
